    Your Favorite Splicing Tools

I love to splice rope. I know the tools I prefer, But I was wondering what other people are using. Heres mine....

1/8" 7/64" Amsteel: I like wire for buries, 16ga. or 18ga. hung ceiling wire. 2' folded over for a 12" tool. I've used loop turners before, didn't care for them. If u accidently go through the side pushing it through for a bury, u have to keep pushing it until it far enough to flip the tab so u can pull it back out. With wire, u can just pull it back out at any point and keep going.

I use an awl that I picked up in the sewing section of Walmart. I use that for thinning the ends and making openings for fixed loops.

1.75 Zing-it: I also use wire. 24ga. seems a bit thin and wiggly at first, But when its folded over, its perfect.

I use an apholstery needle for thinning the ends and making openings

I just started using floral wire that is 22 ga. for my splicing, works well for all sizes of rope down to 1.2mm technorati I have. The coating is great and even when it wears off it still works really well.

Mine floral wire also......starting to think it may be 22ga. I'll check later

I don't use it for 1/8" or 7/64" cause it goes through the sides to easy

I've tried all kinds of tools that others have used here or on YouTube. I don't like loop turners because they always seem to snag. I have two embroidery needles sized for Zing It and 1/8 Amsteel to thin the ends and open the centers, and use one strand of cat5 cable doubled over to do the rest. I keep a short piece for most of the work, and a longer one for long buries.

Residential thermostat wire. Leaving the plastic coating on seems to prevent the wire from breaking at the bend, at least for a while longer. I don't recall the gauge but it's quite small, 22-24?
    Various size knitting needles to open the constrictor. #0 (2mm) for zing-it. #5 (3.75mm) for 7/64. I think #7 (4.5mm) for 1/8.
A tapered awl, like Tacblades uses in his vids.
    Loop turner.
Knit-Pik. They're really too short and break easily, but can be handy for small locked brummel's in zing-it.

Not necessarily a splicing tool but one I find very handy is kevlar shears. Makes cutting the various cordage and webbing super easy. Great for those times when you don't want to or can't use a hot knife. I prefer this to a sharp knife for cutting off strands for tapers, as my knives never seem to be sharp enough for very long.

I use gold craft wire I picked up at Walmart doubled over. I think it is for beading. Only broke it at the bend once so far, but I think I have about 100 yd of it so it's not a big deal. Has worked great for zing-it and 7/64 amsteel.
