I have a couple of CDTs that I have used to create an underquilt and a top quilt. I added about 4 ounces of down to each to add more loft and insulation and cut down the width to something less wide that the 60 inches. Also sewed faux baffles and that has helped fight the sew through design.

The limitations on the CDT as a top quilt is both the length and moisture absorption. It is just long enough to get to my throat (I am 5' 10") but another couple of inches would be better. The fabric does absorb any body moisture and air condensation.

That said, the CDT is useful and a great learning ground (or gateway drug) for sewing and design skills. working on the design of a DIY 20F right now.

double layer of CDT is a waste due to the weight and shifting factor. Just add some inexpensive down...

Agreed about it being a gateway to making a better quilt.

Speaking for myself - it was simply a matter of juggling tradeoffs between weight (extra material) vs time invested (to sew faux baffles).
