1/2 campmor rectangular bag for a UQ ??

    Anybody done this ??

I am thinking cut it in half and seam the edge, remove the zip
and it would make 2 down UQs at $75 each.

You would lose one baffle of down so maybe about 3".

The baffles would run lengthwise and you would end up with a 40x68 quilt.
Is this really big enough ??

    Thanks

A 40"x68" underquilt would work. Most of the partial length underquilts are about 40"x46" in size (yeti).

A 40"x68" top quilt might be ok if you are a small stature person to begin with.

There are trade offs with using a sleeping bag in the manner in which you describe. If the original bag is inexpensive to begin with, then it probably has lower fill power down (ie 575) and is thus heavier and less compressible.

    All points to consider.

    Cheers

Yep, its 550 down. Actually about the same weight to warmth ratio as climasheild XP.
Maybe I will look for one with higher loft down.

Shoule be easy to make though and I thought I could just keep both and use one for 30dF weather and both for very cold.

    Thanks

I have the campmor down bag long rated to 0 degrees and I really like it. I use it as a TQ regularly and have had it in some really cold temps. Let me know how that goes because I have considered a 30 degree rated bag for a summer UQ and TQ. Seems it would be simple, just not sure I want to sacrifice a bag for something that I am not sure will work.

I have a golite ultra 20 TQ and I have had that down to 14dF in heavy johns.
That was with pads and a garlington setup but I really want a UQ.

That said I have a snowlion -40dF bag from the late 70s that probably has 3# of 900 loft down in it.

It weighs 4# even, 10" loft so it was quality for the time. I hate to cut it up, but I never use it these days and nobody really wants to buy it since its faded and a bit beat up, so I have been considering building some Equipment out of it.

Building a down mummy bag is a major PIA, but a rectangular one would not be that bad so I am also considering that route.

In that case, I would start fresh with some downproof ripstop and salvage some down from your Snowlion. Sounds like you would have enough there for quite a few nice projects. TQ, UQ, hat, sleeves, jacket, etc....

And I have about 8 yards of 1.1 oz DWR ripstop from wallyworld just sitting here.

Down is just such a PIA to work with.

I bought what I thought was a really nice -20dF down mummy bag back in the early 70's. I did not have the $ but forked out $175 for it anyway.
Traveled all over the USA with it, my dad used it on a couple of canada hunting trips.

It was great until I washed it and found out the end baffles were not closed.

I made a pair of mitts and a comforter from the down, and had down all over my parents house.

    Unfortunately somebody stole the comforter.

    I was pissed.
