    Winter hex tarp

I'm curious if anyone has done this? I currently have a cheap 10'6" tarp from Amazon, and a chameleon hammock, with some 20° quilts "on the way" from hammock gear. Anyway, it's starting to get cool in the north east, and I probably won't get to test the new quilts till December. I know the typical path for winter hanging is a tarp with doors, but after spending the big bucks for the quilts, I don't really feel like swinging a cuben tarp this minute. Maybe spring sometime.

Anyway, any experience with smaller hex tarps when the temps drop?

You could get an underquilt protector. Like this:

if it was me (and it was not so long ago) I'd get some cheap small tarps from Walmart and just rig them to cover the open ends of your tarp until you can spend the $$$ on doors.

ps I can't wait for the snow myself! got some gear to test

If you have insulation properly rated for the temps you are going to hang in then a tarp with doors isn't as important as long as you set it up to black strong winds. Many times in the winter I hang without a tarp and stay toasty warm in my down quilts.

Same. I've never actually camped out in snow before. But my parents moved recently, have the property to do it on, and are near a few state parks in NY, and the AT passes within about 15 miles of the house. Still perfecting the UL setup, but so far I'm at 10 nights in a hammock this year, 2 in the whites, 2 in boston harbor and a couple others. 3 nights in the chameleon, (one of these days i'll learn how to spell that) and it's always been the bests nights sleep I'll get.

Actually thanksgiving my grandmother will be up, so I'll be banished to the basement, and I'm thinking about stringing the hammock between two of the supports instead of the bed that's down there. Might use the ENO knockoff though instead of the good one. 7 cats and all. Well I'm rambling.

Anyway, I take it the big issue in the winter is the wind going thru the UQ and getting cold that way? Time to do some thinking and some playing. Might just need to grab a blue tarp or two for the backyard and setup that way.

Exactly. A strong wind can be brutal in the winter and you want to be protected. But anything under 10mph or so and I'll do the same - hanging with no tarp or hung high and porch mode.

I'd rather be a few degrees cooler and dry, yet warm with proper insulation opposed to battening down the hatches and creating a condensation chamber. A nice cold breeze carrying away my wet breath every time I exhale...perfect!

Be careful what "supports" you hang on. Older house with basements often have jack poles in the basement to help support saging floor joists.

I'm guessing a house would constitute the ultimate widow maker.

In fact unless I'm mistaken, in the director's cut of The Wizard of Oz, that's what happened to the wicked witch.

These are the non-jacking type, and seem to be sunk pretty well into both the floor and ceiling. House is also about 10 years old. I will take a closer look however.

yeah, that scares me, would rather see you set up a turtledog type stand down there or rigged to the joists or something, too many people getting hurt hanging from the wrong thing lately
