    3-Season UQ for a Noob

    Hey guys,

It's a little overwhelming looking at all of the different gear options. Since I essentially have zero experience with any of them it's difficult to decide what will meet my needs.

I'm looking for a 3-season UQ that would not be too hot in the 60-70's (do you even use an underquilt then?) and something that would be comfortable into the 40's (with clothing layers, and maybe bearable into the 30's with a supplemental pad and additional clothing). I'm not a gram weenie, but weight does matter!

    Thanks for your time

Yes, you'll need something, even on warmish nights.

You've described a KAQ...talk to Paul at Arrowhed Equipment.

If you sew, or know someone that does, you can make a simple synthetic UQ by basically sewing 4 straight lines (even semi-straight will do ), and hand looping a couple of insulation stabilizers in the middle of the quilt. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be yours and it would easily meet your requirements.

I think Just Jeff or someone around here has some basic simple to make UQ designs.

    Weight matters you say?

My reply is: Warbonnet Yeti. The 3-Season model will take you into the 30s easily. Lower than that if you're a warm sleeper. My 3-Season Yeti lives on my hammock from about March - October, the other months are Winter Yeti playtime. I haven't had the chance to try any of the other partial length uqs that are out there on the market these days, but for the weight the Yetis are incredibly efficient and will keep you nice and toasty.

What hammock? If it's a Hennessy the only choice is a JRB Nest.

if you are looking for a UQ that will work in high temps in the 60-70° range, consider a UQ that has drawcords in the end channels that will allow you to vent by letting heat escape.
the te-wa has a tried and true range from 70° down to 25°

Sorry, forgot to mention I have a WBBB as my only hammock at the moment. I'm fairly certain, from what I have read, most UQ's will fit the WBBB with a little fuss for the footbox.

My main seasons outdoors are the shoulder seasons. Being in Northwest Indiana, I hate the humidity and skeeters that the summer months bring. Ideally, I would be backpacking mainly in the cooler temperatures but if an opportuity presented itself I would still like to be comfortable closer to summer as well. If I had to weight it, the lower end of the scale (cooler temps) would be my priority.

The 3/4 quilt is interesting. I can see the merit for 3 season use, but I would hope I would still be comfortable enough in lower temperatures. I know people swear by them or find that a footpad is enough, but i'd hate to spend the money on a quilt for my feet to be cold. However, it saves on pack weight and overall pack volume.

Thanks for the input thus far.

    I love my KAQ!

First season I did the whole pad thing which was a huge pain. I saved my pennies and got a KAQ and enjoyed it all last year! I've camped down into the low 30's with it. I was a bit unprepared and was chilly. If I would have had a pad or a better bag it would have been a non-issue.

I motorcycle camp so weight/size wasn't an issue but it is very nice to not have to worry about temps. I usually throw it on regardless and just let it droop if it's really warm out and it's easy to wake up at night and cinch it up a bit if it gets chilly.

KAQ is a great option, especially in the temp range you are talking about. I've got a KAQ New River and am very pleased with it's insulating. I like that it's full length so I don't have to worry about foot padding or anything other than me and a top quilt on the inside.
