    Kind of along the same lines, I've wondered if decorative sticking along the main run of the strap would significantly compromise the webbing.

    Using a contrasting colored thread, many of these patterns new machines can do automatically would be pretty neat looking.

    There is no doubt about it... a stitch's strength is in the direction of the line of stitches.

    That's why I make bar tacks linear on Molly Mac Packs, instead of using zig zag stitches as with mil-spec PALS arrays. I've thought about how nice it would look to have a bar tack covered with zig zag stitches, but that would add nothing but cost, without benefit.
