I use a Simply Light Designs gear hammock whoopied on to Beetle Buckles with the CL of the hammock.I took an old bag that 40 pounds of salt came in and use it and/or my sit pad for a place to keep my socks free of forest crud.I like to think it keeps the spiders off my gear.Brother in law nearly lost a finger to the bite of a brown recluse...............

Hang it from the hammock suspension, under the tarp, for best results.
I like the head since its normally lower than the foot. The pack is reachable and also blocks some wind.
    Never from the tarp RL.
A small carabiner will hold the nearly empty pack. Most of the weight left in the pack will be minimal.
Shoes can be hung from the foot end hammock suspension.
Slugs and other creepy crawlies are less likely to be finding their way into your pack and shoes.
The only caveat is when you move in the hammock, the pack and shoes can bounce around . So expect the startling twang of that noise..its not a bear.

Give it a try. If you don't like it, there are other solutions.

Ya, I like that too... being able to reach down out of the hammock for what I need without getting out of my comfortable cocoon.

Thanks all. I'll have to give it a try. Sounds like hanging it at the head end would be best.

As far as bugs, my pack is sprayed with permethrin. As far as rodents, my food is hung elsewhere anyway. Has anyone had a problem while backpacking with rodents bothering a pack without any food in it?

In nearly 50 years of camping I have never had critters disturb my gear... regardless.
Worst I ever had was an obstinate elk in Rocky Mountain Park who wouldn't GTFO until he had browsed the grasses next to my tent to his satisfaction.... oh, yeah, and I had to pass on a really nice site in the Jenny Lake Campground at Grand Teton because a cow moose wouldn't get up off the parking space.

You can get a Dutch Biners, clip that onto the hand/hang loop on your backpack. Then use that to clip over the hammock suspension as others are noting. Or have some zing-it and go around a tree, put in a quick Marlin spike, clip the biner thru the spike.....lots of ways to use the biner.

One night I caught a racoon dragging my empty (except keys and wallet yikes!) pack off. There must have been some food smells in it. I have tether everything including my boots (salt) ever since.

My boots and empty backpack hang off my hammock suspension (under the tarp).

    Contents are either;
    • in use,
    • worn,
    • on the ground,
    • or stowed in ridgeline organiser and peak bag.

Rodents can leave chocolate tic-tacs everywhere they go even if they're not chewing on something. Double check your shoes if you leave them on the ground.
