    possibility for a toggle

After contemplation of whoopie sling toggles, and rejecting things like wooden dowels, I roamed the aisles of Orchard Supply Hardware and found these.

The wire gate would keep the post from sliding free. The post is not hollow. They weigh less than the large climbing biners I was using with the stock Warbonnet straps. About two bucks apiece... haven't hung with them yet on the whoopie slings. It takes significant force to open and close them, but it's not hard to do.

They would work fine but might be overkill and may be heavy compared to alternatives. The toggle can be fairly lightweight since the webbing takes the load, not the toggle.

I was just looking for something that wouldn't pop out when I get in the hammock, and that I would not lose.

I also would use them for other things, such as fastening snowshoes to the pack....

Good Idea. I think they are called lynch pins. Definitely peace of mind knowing they won't slip out. I usually use twigs I find on the ground and sometimes wonder if they'll hold.

Multiuse without severe weight penalty is the key. Search McMaster Carr for aluminum lynch pins. Same functionality and plenty security with less weight penalty.

actually... I think they might be plated aluminum. They don't have the heft I'd expect from steel, for the size. I'm not sure what the intended use is, possibly light fencing fasteners? But prolly adequate to semi-load bearing use.

I've used some as the attachment mechanisms on homemade litterboxes before. I don't use them anymore for that. I'm sure they work for toggles too. I've always just used sticks.

For small diameter flexible eye round rope applications, nearly any extruded or forged metal peg should work. I've been picking up the larger aluminum round stock tent staked from Wally World, cutting then to 1" section and drilling a 1/16" tether hole at one end to secure the pin near the eye. As statd previously, with small diameter rope, the rope rather than the pin supports the majority of the stress.
