Use some sort of wick. Toilet paper, carbon felt, fiberglass/graphite wood stove seal, etc.
Trangia makes a winter attachment that has a wick and it attaches under the stove.
    I collect vintage camp stoves.
    I roast coffee at home.

Good you had your car close !

I always wondered what I would do in such a situation if I was away from everything... You would probably need to make a fire... Not an easy task to do in a snow storm in the middle of the night...

I was close too last time I took the wrong tarp on a winter trip :

Bottom right is my down jacket. Fortunately my underquilt stayed dry (top right).

Wow! In picture #1, 9PM, is the green thing your UQ? Is the blue thing bottom right your pack, or your down jacket? What is the pinkish thing right under the green? Is that firewood between the pink and blue?

Man, it really blew in under that tarp, didn't it?

Yes, that's right... The green thing is the uq and the blue thing, my down jacket. The pink is just a plastic bag with some stuff I had protected there. The wood was an improvised seat for my dinner, as it was originally raining.

The good surprise, is the next morning :

I am intent on learning from these problematic events others have experienced. I sure appreciate all the stories of good and bad in the trip reports here. Momma always wanted me to learn from others mistakes and not make them all myself. Reading these and adding safety gear to my kit as I venture out as well as testing close to home is becoming a standard for me now. I thought I was pretty well educated about camping before, renewing my respect for the harshness of weather and how quickly things can go bad.
