I can see this being a problem if we did the raffle as a "one bag". They wouldn't be there to pick from the table offerings...

RAFFLE OPTIONS:
Ok, I need quick votes from people on these 2 options:
Winning by Proxy: Yes or No
Raffle Format: Chinese Raffle (like years 2-3 One bag for each item) or The "One bucket - Grab what you want off tiered tables" method like MAHHA, Last year, Hangcon, and everywhere else.
My thoughts:
I'm fine with winning by proxy, meaning someone is on site to win the prize, even if the "winner" is not. (but the winning ticket needs to be) It's hard enough keeping track of making sure everyone is back for the raffle with just the lighthouse tour. With talks of Kayak trips, and whale watches, I really don't want to exclude anyone if one particular group is running late.
For the format: The "one bucket" method is a LOT faster. I think back to the 3rd Annual hang, with us taking over an hour to finish the actual raffle. Everyone was getting cranky and the mosquitos down by the rec room were bad. Last year, the raffle was larger, in terms of items given, and money raised and we were done in 20 minutes.
I'd rather give everyone an extra 40 minutes to buy tickets, get settled, and have "hands on" time with all of the donations.
Bust open the piggy banks... This is going to be our largest raffle yet.
I see it more as a "I won something" type of deal. Other than NJHeart2Heart, I'm not talking about people who 100% won't be on site.. I'm thinking more in terms of a group running late. If we start the raffle without them, I'm sure they'd be happier to have won something than to have won nothing. There is no perfect solution. I try like hell to make sure every group is back in time, and everyone is more than welcome to take my number and call me if they're going to be late. In past years, it's been 1 group I need to keep track of. Now, it sounds like 3 or more.
As a basic rule, I'll be selling tickets all day. Let's say the tentative start for the raffle is 5:30-6.
The "one bucket method" is also easier for all day ticket sales. I'll literally have a bucket. If people buy tickets in the morning, throw them in the bucket, and leave the other half on site with someone (not me) they don't need to worry about entering them into the individual bags, which most likely won't be set up until right before the raffle. We tried setting up early in the rec room at the 3rd, and the wind hated me, even inside.
I am willing to help set up and man the tables if that makes a difference.
I vote for the old version, ChineseStyle
... if we do it that way then the whole proxy thing becomes m00t.
If the raffle is not important enough to you to be there and drop your tickets in the bags, too bad, but if you are just not there when your ticket is pulled you still get the prize you wanted.
[My basic position is that there are always some things that I don't need or want. I'd like the choice of putting my "ticket power" for the items I'd like.]

I personally hate the one bucket method. The speed is nice, but it gives the potential of all the good items going away with the first round of people coming up. The one bucket method would prevent me from buying tickets.
Please remember Ted, the reason for the raffle isn't about the stuff it's about the charity we're supporting. The winnings are just bait to get people to eat lobster (and in certain other cases *cough*CHAAAAZ and Gil*cough*cough* boat loads of bacon.) And also, the "too bad, so sad" mentality isn't something that we encourage at this hang. I remember we allowed winning by proxy the times I've been there for the Chinese style, and I've seen people win by proxy in the "one bucket" method at other hangs. I'm for Proxy Winning.
We will see what the consensus shows people want when it comes to the raffle format. Which is why it has been asked. Thank you for letting everyone know what way you want the balance to shift.

P.S. since we're voting and stuff - vote on Friday Night Potluck? yay or nay? I'm still very much in the YAY category!

Sorry, Jess.
I certainly didn't mean anything like "too bad, so sad"... your words.
If we one-bag, I just don't see how someone not present can "pick" an item off the table and move the raffle forward.... 'splain me please. I can be kinda thick.

HI All,
I vote Potluck: Well, if we don't do it Friday, we would have to do it Saturday, but then Saturday everyone is eating Lobster so that does not make sense. It's a little harder to do Friday as people are just getting in. What time were you thinking for Friday? Like 6:00-7:00? For the potluck? That would be an ok time for me.
Vote: Voting! I like Voting! I vote for the Chinese style raffle. I like the idea of being able to put my money where I would prefer to get something I am interested in. That makes me want to put more tickets in! IE: more for charity! I personally was not a huge fan of last years' raffle method. I like it taking a while. Especially if it is after dinner and we are all having a postprandial beverage or 2.
Vote for Proxy Winning? Why not? Let's encourage everyone to give to charity. If we do the Chinese raffle they can tell someone where to put the tickets. And not where YOU are thinking-- (you know who you are if you thought it). .
Thanks J and J for organizing so well. I can't wait to meet you Jess, always great to have more women at these hangs!
