Barefoot makes sense -- I usually do that as well.
Another trick is to turn the floor pedal around, so that the high side is closest to you. It seems weird, but somehow it makes it easier to regulate the speed.

About creepy Singer - It was a long time ago and I was just a kid. So I don't remember, why it was working that way. Maybe slow button was broken(
Now I'm using pedals, but I've never thought to use it barefoot. Next time I'll definitely try this. Thanks for your comments and tips!
I have used about two sewing machines in my lifetime. The first one I was using was taking from me by my younger sister because she loved it so much. I had no choice but to buy another one because sewing machine is an item that gives me joy at home.
Picked up a Brother JX2517 17-Stitch Sewing Machine for about $100 at Walmart and it's done the job for my projects (hammocks, tarps, quilts, etc).
