I think a lot of the variation in people's experiences with this is because of variation in the natural air humidity. If it's humid, your breath will cause a lot of condensation. In cold dry air, such as I usually get in the upper midwest, and combined with the newer water-resistant down, I think it is perfectly OK to do this at least to occasionally warm up your nose. As others have stated, I would be careful about doing it all night, or on a multi-day trip.

At home, I can be reading under my down comforter for up to 3 hours before going to bed. This thread has me considering a longer first TQ -- possibly, even a wider one.. I imagine that I'd have my head outside and sleeping before it's colder than 40°F though.

I'm usually building a downy wall around my face before sleeping at home (combined with a down pillow, of course). I had previously scratched the down hoody idea since I already own a merino wool balaclava from the motorcycle. You've, now, got me drooling for more camp gear.

I like to use a CDT for a pillow, which I will also wrap around my head, and tuck into my TQ. I just bunch it all up, or leave it partially in a bishop bag for the pillow effect. I feel the weight is plenty to keep my head warm. I can keep my mouth / nose uncovered to vent. I'm in the "don't breathe recycled air" camp as well.

Thread from 2015>>> Top quilt over the head...WOW!!

But as excited as I was about this 3 years ago, I haven't done it since. I'll take science's word for it and not play with fire...or wet down.

Is everybody that does this an ultralighter who doesn't bring a hat and/or buff?!?

I just don't get wanting to do that unless its something you do by habit at home.

I guess it's a way of keeping the face, especially nose, warm. Your entire head, really. No seams, gaps, things to put on or feel constructing. Just a claustrophobic cave to huddle inside.

Basically replicating the a good mummy bag design, without the small opening for your mouth/nose.

Ya like a tent! Seems like a lot of folks are moving tentward. A suspended tent?

Okay, okay, shall we all back off the hyperbole a tad bit. There are a lot of reasons for choosing hammock, and conversely, a lot of reasons for choosing a tent over a hammock too.

I think it is time to re-watch Dutch's ultimate hammock UL system where he is lying stretched out on just a ridge line. A real hoot. I couldn't find it on youtube, perhaps someone else knows where to find it?

I'm thinking I could dispense with hanging over a fire in a piece of ductwork and just bring plenty of down quilts top and bottom and my snorkel mask instead.Might need a hose extension though.........................
