    Pulling Quilt Over Your Head

Question about pulling your top quilt right up over your head when you get cold... I never do this in my sleeping bag as I'm scared about getting condensation in my down. My question is, if you pull your quilt up over your head does the moisture from your breath stay in the down in the area just on top of your face area, or does it migrate down the baffles deeper in the bag (towards your body)? I've always assumed that if I breath into a bag pulled over your head that the moisture would work its way down into the bag area that covers your body as well....

I'm talking about winter use here as well...

    Thanks!

I don’t know but I would hope that your baffle system would separate the down enough to prevent moist down transferring the moisture

I guess it would also depend on the baffle design? I'm assuming horizontal baffles would do a better job at keeping that moisture from getting down into the bag....but that's just a guess..

I end up pulling my quilt over my head a lot and while I've noticed the top of the quilt being damp it's always dried out in just a short period of time so in my case it's just not that big of a deal.

Condensation in your topquilt - is condensation in your topquilt. I don't think it matters if it migrates down the baffles. I'm not sticking my head underneath my topquilt no matter what.

I recently had George alter my TQ order in case I wanted to pull my TQ over my head as you described but have wondered about how a frost bib could be useful in such a situation when in a hammock. Like yours, mine also has the chevron style baffles. Since I like to sleep on my side when on the ground I wanted it long enough to cover my head and allow me to exhale onto the ground. Inside the hammock I sleep "on my back" in a more upright position due to sleep apnea and thus I would most likely not cover my face and retain the use of the bib. In that case I could double the extra material over perhaps at my neck. We'll see.

All my life I have been preached at to not do this because your down will get wet.
Well I confess, I have done this and for the one or two nights during winter that I go hammock camping I have never gotten cold from it.
My quilt or sleeping bag has never let me down.

IMO too many ((( Expedition to Andies))) rules are applied to your simple overnite in the local woods and it is so silly now that I thing about it.
