    Ahoy from Alaska!

I'm an Eagle Scout who's been out of the camping game for over a decade. My wife and I recently moved up to Alaska and I've been inspired to take up backpacking again. I only have experience with tents, but while I was researching alcohol stoves I ran across Shug's youtube channel and now I really want to give hammocking a go.

I'm slowly building myself a kit thanks to the wonderful guides on this site. I threw together a pair of whoopie slings and continuous loops tonight and will hopefully stitch up some treestraps and a hammock this weekend. Then it's on to figuring out insulation and tarps!

I look forward to sharing in all your adventures, thank you for being such an incredible resource.

Welcome kroot, you are living my life in Alaska- lucky you. The folks here will help you- they are nice. Ask questions and do your research it will all come together and you will be so comfortable. The one thing I can tell you is this is a very individual's comfort type of sleeping and another thing is practice at home before geting out there without a bailout plan, especially when it is cold. Enjoy ...

    Ahoy from Alaska!

After you meet the challenges of CBS and CRP, the rest is gravy.

Shug’s videos are the best at solving both.

I'll definitely be doing some overnights in my backyard before taking anything on the road. I'm looking forward to spending any night time outside in the cold, even if it's in the suburbs! I'll also use that time as an opportunity to see how well my dog handles sleeping in below freezing weather. She's a husky mutt and has been loving Alaska so far (previously we lived in Tennessee, which she did not enjoy).

The trick is to marry an extremely smart and talented person who can teach you all the skills you don't have!

Yup, I've already watched all his vids on both of these topics and will be paying close attention to them when putting my gear together.

    Welcome Kroot!

If you are up for a little drive, you can walk into the sites at Eklutna lake and it's a good spot to hang. There are some sites right next to the day use parking, so it's easy to bail out if you get uncomfortable.

    Good luck!

It's shockingly beautiful and I haven't even really been outside yet! You'll love it.

That sounds great! I'm currently testing everything in my garage, just finished my first prototype hammock a few days ago. So far so good, but I think it needs to be a bit longer; I miscalculated the losses in the fabric along the way as I was stitching/whipping it up. Once I get the hammock down, it'll be on to underquilts!
