    New from New York!

    Hey y'all!
Western New Yorker here. I'm new to backpacking and hammock camping (but not hammock napping), and looking for all and any advice! I have a bear butt hammock and slap straps that I got from a friend who upgraded his set up and now I'm obsessed! I want to buy everything, but I guess I'll start with the necessities to get me out on the trail. If anyone has recommendations for a lower priced under quilt, top quilt, and rain fly I would really appreciate it! I am a nursing student currently so my budget is tight and my time limited until the summer when I plan to hike and kayak as many weekends as I can!
Side note if anyone is in the Rochester area and has trail/waterways for overnight trips to suggest that would be awesome as well!

Hello and welcome from Northern Arkansas! As far as budget minded quilts, check our Wilderness Logics Budget line of gear, Hammock Gear Econ line, and Loco Libre Saver Series. An excellent Underquilt for consideration is an Arrowhead Equipment Jarbidge. A Hammock Gear quest, or UGQ Outdoors penny pincher are great tarps. You can make Gear mistakes, but if you can buy the cottage gear, you won’t be disappointed. Check them out here on the forums! No bad choices here! Enjoy!

    New from New York!

Welcome from Kentucky. I’ll echo the recommendations for the econo line quilts from the cottage vendors. I’m partial to the Hammock Gear Econ line myself, but only because I haven’t purchased from the other vendors (yet). The econo lines have a slight weight and bulk penalty over the premium lines, but they come at a significant cost savings. It’s all a trade off.

    Good luck and happy hanging!

Thanks for all of the different companies, I have been looking at the loco libre saver series, but I am glad to have a few more vendors with econo lines to look at!

I am in same situation with getting into hanging. I usually hang in the backyard or off a couple hooks in the living room! I had a good sleep at letchworth (some cool hikes here) toward the end of summer last year , got a cold butt.. bought a couple down throws from Costco (20 bucks a piece) and sewed them. There are a couple neat ways you make a top quilt and under quilt with baby diaper snaps or other neat ways without having to sew.
