Hyper D XL for a gathered End Hammock

I am embarking on a gathered end hammock using Hyper D XL, that gives me something like 72" for width, i was planning on 12' ... any reason to not go full width, advice, pitfalls on the plan?

Beyond a certain point the extra width doesn't do much but flop on your face and your feet. Beyond a certain point the extra length doesn't do much but make it harder to find suitable trees. There's a sweet spot, but it's different for all of us.

What you can do is take your raw fabric, fold up the ends like you would if you were going to whip it (lots of ways to do this, e.g. accordion fold towards the center), and tie a sheet bend around it with a continuous loop. The selvage is plenty strong enough for this as long as your not bouncing on the edge, and you'll be able to experiment with different lengths, and get a feel for how much (if any) of the width you want to remove.
It is a very alert, active sheep, with a stylish, lively carriage.

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

I have one that I made at 11 ft long. It is a bit floppy with the extra width. I don’t really care for it. The length is good though for me. Happy Hanging!

If you’re tall full width might be nice.

I know the material is different but I have a wide Chameleon and a regular width SLD Trail Lair and they are both made of Hexon 1.6. I find the trail lair more comfortable. Due to the extra width on the Chameleon there is a lot more material that creates walls around you. You lay deeper into the hammock and consequently, at least for me, I find it difficult to get out of the hammock.

I started with a hyperd xl. My newest hammock is a 1.2 robic. Material aside, I decided to cut this one down to a pre-sewn width of 63” with a finished width of 61”. No floppy fabric like my hyperd, this one seems to be the perfect width. Both are 11’ long. Sucks to cut perfectly good fabric off but IMO 61” finished width seems to be perfect for me.

I made 2 out of Robic XL and the only issue is that I need to lean way over to see out the side.

Future hammocks will be cut down to a finished width of 58 inches.

My first hammock was regular width and about 11' long. Didn't quite like the lay so went with Robic XL at 12' for the second. A bit of flop on the edges to be sure but a bit of a plus and minus in my opinion. Easy to burito myself up in to help deflect a breeze and I don't feel like I'm going to loose a topquilt over the sides. Easier to splay out too so it's easier on my calves to find a spot where they don't feel like they are being pushed on. On the down side it can obviously be floppy and I hate when it decides to fold over my head. Also a bit more work to get in and out I feel. On my next one I'll probably split the difference and go with a 11.5' length with a 64" width.

I tried the wide hammock (72") when the fabric first became available. I prefer it over a "standard" 58" or so width. It is very comfortable but a lot of excess fabric. I then made a hammock out of the 1.6 Hyper D XL with a finished width of about 65". At 6' tall this width is perfect for me. Really comes down to a personal preference. Good luck!

This is the kind of info I was really hoping to get .... thank you all.

For the floppyniss .... would a "knotty mod maybe help?

I am comfortable cutting it down, but if I don't need to ... well, when you are sewing, who wants more work
