If there is a rule against hammocks, then look for some places that would make good hammock hanging locations and suggest that the college / university plant hammock trees ( heavy duty metal posts ) and state that you will lead a fund raiser to help pay for the cost of this endeavor.

Leave campus. If hanging hammocks on campus is not allowed, find somewhere less restrictive or less regulated o enjoy your hammock. Clearly, hanging in the woods is less cool than being seen hanging on campus but, I assume your motives are hammocking rather than being the cool kid on campus.

Echoing what others have said, I think your first step needs to be figuring out whether it's a written or unwritten rule. An unwritten rule isn't a rule at all and, as such, isn't enforceable. If there's an actual rule, things change. Schedule a meeting with the Dean and find out the appeal or change process for outdated rules. It may require a demonstration of what constitutes hanging. Often, these rules came to be from people damaging trees. Offer to help amend the rule to allow hanging but only by means deemed safe for the trees (e.g. 1" miniumum strap width, 6" diameter trees, no soft barked trees, etc). Demonstrating that there's a safe way to do it may work a lot better than just straight up fighting a no hammock rule. I've taken this approach at a few state parks in the area. A little knowledge and understanding goes a long way.

If it really is an "unwritten" rule, then it seems like it would be tough for them to punish you over it.

It is probably not really written rule vs unwritten rule, but rather rule that mentions hammocks vs general rule about molesting the landscaping that doesn’t mention hammocks.

My experience with some people who are in positions of authority making minimum wage finds them trying to impress themselves with their importance. Ask somebody who can read to show you the regulation prohibiting hammocks. It may be as simple as keep off the grass or it may be something else-maybe a prohibition on camping out on campus. If the campus cops don't carry a gun, they are probably not even required to pass any tests nor demonstrate knowledge of rules to get the job.
Be prepared to demonstrate, to someone really in authority, tree straps and explain why anyone hanging in a hammock really does like live trees.
    Good luck.

Keep in mind that this sort of "rule" was probably made because students before you decided to start stacking hammocks and doing other questionable things. Maybe you can convince and teach the powers that be that not all hangers are severe insurance liabilities and most are responsible people who want to do the right thing and relax in a hammock and not be a nuisance. I'm expecting this same eventual response from State and National campgrounds because of the idiots who stack hammocks 30 feet high and have no regard for others around them or the trees.

Get some Play-Doh and a coloring book and tell them that it's your safe space;<) college campuses seem to like that sort of thing these days.
By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...
