Resource for learning more about stitch strength, thread, etc

    Hello,

I'm starting to get more and more into DIY. Been working a lot on stuff sacks, modifying quilts, etc.

I've seen a lot of good resources on making gear, but most rely on a good understanding of sewing. Most videos and information I've found are more about cosmetic/non load bearing.

While I've found good sources for how to perform various tasks, I'm not really sure when to use different stitch sizes vs types and when to use thick vs thin thread.

For example, do I just use 2 straight stitches for a hammocks gathered end? Or if my machine can do a triple stich will that be more secure? Should I use Mara 50 since it's load bearing?

I have many more questiond like that...

    Thanks
    Matt

There has been lots of this info discussed, but without a sewing subforum here it's hard to find. Google can help.

    Searches such as:

    "mara tera +site:hammockforums.net"
    "needle size +site:hammockforums.net"
    "end channel diy +site:hammockforums.net"
"gathered end channel whipping warbonnet +site:hammockforums.net"

will yield a bunch of reading for you. You'll find a mix of subjective and objective tips for thread, needles, and techniques for just about everything. I'd recommend wading through that and trying out a few things that make sense to you.

    Have fun!

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

Check out Jellyfish's videos on youtube -- search for "jellyfish report"
She's on this forum, and in addition to some great complex projects, has a number of basic how-to vids that are very helpful

A simple google search for 'load bearing sewing' will take you down a deep, deep rabbit hole that you may never find your way out of. (I know I'm still wandering aimlessly around down there! ) Good luck.
