Foothills Trail - 8 Day Westbound - NFS (Not For Sissies)

Carrying 43 lbs from Table Rock up to Sassafras Mtn would be a tough day 1 for sure. I liked the old Cantrell Homestead as well. I got a kick out of the fire pits and rock chairs that people have made from the old foundation/fireplace stones. I've never through hiked it, but keep hoping to get the time.

It was a surprise! I kept asking myself why nobody warned me about this. Then I realized it's a wink and a nod. As our shuttle driver said at the trail head: "the trail is right there", with a grin. Elevation profiles do Not tell the whole story.

I appreciate your kind words and glad I could be of some help. I love a good trip report with pictures and this one is awesome. Glad you had such a great hike. I've done it westbound like you and remember how good it felt to get to Whitewater Falls and know all the hardest was behind me. That was a tough five days. We will be starting eastbound in a few weeks. Your report has got me stoked!

Swampfox, I'm glad I could offer something to get you pumped up. You'll hit it close to bloom. We were weeks early. I was shocked how delayed the seasonal change was compared to Columbia. The closer we got to Oconee, the more the season felt to be changing. It was a magical trip in many ways. I'm grateful to you, Sir.

Sorry to post on an old thread. I wanted to say thanks for the trip report. I am planning a through hike the second week of march this year and was wondering if you remember the temperatures from your hike last year. Thanks!

I think this early, you should plan for freezing temps at night.
You’ll be better informed the closer you get.
I would watch the weather in Salem SC for the eastern end, Sapphire NC for the NC portion around Lake Jocassee, and Mountain Rest SC for the Burrell’s Ford/Chattooga River section.
