20* or 10* for HG Econ?

Need some forum advice on what temp TQ to order.

I have a CDT and snugpak that I use for temps of 40* and higher.

I don’t usually sleep outside if it is lower than 20* but have read that it’s good to have a 10* buffer on your quilts vs temp.

I was ordering a HG Econ TQ, standard length, wide, w zipper and was looking at overstuff to keep my feet warm. Then I started reading posts that it may be better to have higher loft than extra fill.

    Bottom line question:
Will a 10* quilt be comfortable in temps like 40, 30, and 20?

A 10° quilt would suit you fine in those temps.

Overstuffed = more loft. A 20° quilt is a great all around quilt and a 20° overstuffed would be a great quit for temps that may dip below that from time to time. Most 3 season under quilts are rated at 20° as a point of reference.

Definitely. I use a 20 degree for anything over 20 degrees.

Comes down to the extra bulk with packing...which won't be much. If you are very rarely going below 20*, a 20* will be fine...you can always put your down jacket over the toe-end for a little extra down there. If you run cold, yeah, a 10* will give you a buffer. For me, I tend to go for the extra bulk, which really isn't much to gather up a sweet slumber! But we each much pick our poison...

I’ve turned into a cold sleeper, so definitely like the buffer. I see lots of folks get 20’s and add a couple ounces of overfill, and that works great. For me, I went ahead and bought a 10 with no overstuff to take advantage of the bigger baffle. I use it up to 40-45, then switch over to my summer quilt. That’s what works for me.

Do some jumping jacks, always eat a calorie dense meal prior to snoozing, do the Nalgene hot water bottle trick, and/or buy electric filament socks (batt powered). Also stack quilts. These are some ways to boost your UQ rating.

As you know and can see by the comments, everyone is different and there is not definitive answer. However, if you're asking the question should I get a 10 instead of a 20 then I think you should just get the 10. If there was no doubt, then there would be no question. Why doubt?

Thanks all! - for the small weight and bulk difference the 10 seems worth it. I only plan using up to 40* so an extra few degrees in the low end give some extra versatility. If I needed a 0*, I’d be staying home :-)
