    Tarp over or under ridgeline

What are the benefits of hanging your tarp over or under a separate ridgeline, instead of hanging from the usual tie-out locations? Adjustability? Help with snow-weight?

It just seems like a small extra effort to me. Please enlighten me about this.

The only advantage I have seen in using an actual ridgeline for my tarps (under) is that it makes setting up in the wind a lot easier. The tarp doesn't fly around as much when you can drape it over the RL. That's all I've got.

it depends on if you like to see the stars. with a full ridgeline you can set up the tarp the pull it half way down, then pull up if it starts raining.

NCPatrick, just do it so you can be one of the cool kids

I am like you on this. It just seems like a waste of time to me. Sometimes you can overdue things that are already easy.

You mean pull it halfway down to one end (for instance closer to the foot end)?

Also, thanks for the input Cannibal.

I tried the "cord under the tarp" ridgeline but went back to my original setup of cord to tieouts with cordlocks for tweaking. I thought I'd like the idea of having a full cord under my tarp for hanging things, but I like using snakeskins with my tarp more and that worked better with original setup. I guess I could still put a light line from tie out to tie out under my tarp to use as a hanging line, but it won't be a ridgeline.

It takes me no less steps to set up my full ridge line than it did when I had two part ridge line. The prussics are permanently attached. I need one knot to make the ridge line tight and 2 s-biners to hang the tarp.

    Ewker,
exactly attach both corners on each side to the stakes at the foot end, after placing your stakes at the head end. then if you wake up to the sounds of rain, I usually hear it on the trees before it hits me, and attach the guylines on the head end.

So what benefits do you get from having a separate tarp ridgeline vs. not having one?
