    Couple thoughts....

First, I think some people may be buying a hammock more for lounging around in camp than full time use. It certainly seems that way in XexorZ's initial post from the way the ENO's are being marketed.

Second, the way things are, it is easy to understand a family deciding to spend week's vacation at a campground rather than going for a cruise or trip to Disney or elsewhere. From my perspective, an inexpensive tent from any of the big box stores is a more likely candidate for such trips.

You will see them here and there and most will be basic but truly I think we and our hammocks will not become the mainstream. For that, I am sorta glad. Most just want poles and a floor.

I think the comparison would more resemble that of the current ratio of tents to tarptents in the hiking community. Hammocks and tarptents serve opposite niches, for the most part. People who like and use tarptents tend to be very weight sensitive and are willing to make comfort compromises to keep the weight at a minimum. Hammock users tend to be on the other end of that scale. While still being sensitive to weight, we will always tend to put more importance behind comfort than we do weight. Again, very general statements. Leave me alone Ewker!

Point is, both are niche products and neither are likely to dominate the market in the near future. I tend to take a more optimistic view of the impact hammocks could have on our outdoor spaces. I'd like to think they could someday influence parks to install 'hanging posts' in their campgrounds to accommodate the popularity of hammock campers. Our money spends just as well as the dude/chic round the corner that had the generator running all night.

I like the way you think!

Hanging Posts- very cool idea. I guess I was a little negative in my last post. Still I would be more in favor of groundlings moving to hammocks due to example rather than us going out and drumming up business and actively preaching to gospel. Just me.

I am becoming a gram weenie slowly but will not compromise a good night's sleep. I consider an extra pound to insure that I am well rested to be better for my enjoyment of the outdoors. That pound is so much easier to carry without being stiff and sore.

MRO in Damascus has been carrying hammocks for a long time. Got my first ENO from them, which I'm reluctantly still using today.

    I hope your right Shug.

I kinda like being different. If hammocks ever go mainstream, all the good sites we like to hang in will get overrun. Then the hammock regulations start. That leads to the hammock police making regular rounds harassing innocent hangers.

    It's all downhill from there.
