    Texas Noob

Howdy from Texas. Just pulled the trigger on an HH Exped and have one big question: How in the dickens do you get into your sleeping bag (for cold weather) in a bottom entry? I know this is probably a stupid question, but it needs answering, at least for this old cowboy. Thanks for any help and I LOVE this site! Great folks and LOTS of info.

Welcome 1poet. The easiest thing is to use your sleeping bag as a quilt. In other words open it up except for a couple of feet at the bottom and then drape it over you. Of course you'll need some kind of bottom insulation. I would also suggest you get the zipper mod. as it allows more dimensions of use for your HH. I'm sure some HH folks will post in here about the benefits of the Zipper Mod. Welcome to the forum

Howdy and welcome to Hammock Forums from a fellow Texan!

Might turn into a bit of a wrestling match entering a stock HH and trying to get into a bag. Worth taking a look at getting a modification to your HH by our very own 2Q/ZQ

    Welcome to HF,
I agree, the zipper mods change your outlook on the Hennessy.
A sleeping bag with a center zipper works the best for hammocking, if you are going to use a sleeping bag.

All I use is sleeping bags, no, under quilt stuff...And have been down into the low low
20s up here south of Huntsville, TX.

Lastnight/thismorning only got down to 39*, and my ECW sleeping bag, and home made sleeping bag liner/pad did excellent.

It was once suggested that you could stand next to the entrance slit of a HH and step into your sleeping bag, like putting on a pair of pants. Then, holding the top half of the bag around your waist, stick your head and upper body into the hammock, sit back, and pull in your legs. Not sure how many people who tried this lived to tell about it.

Thats how I hung in my original hennesey with a sleeping bag for a long time and the main reason I did not do more than I wanted to... then I found this site, got a BB, will do the zipper mod to the hennesey for my wife. Now I can look like I have dignity when I enter/exit the hammock!

Welcome! Great to see another Texan on here.

Sleeping bags can be a bit of a challenge but there are a few ways to go with them. Certainly the suggestion for the 2QZQ zipper modification is a good one so you have a top entry option.

WV's suggestion about "putting it on" as you sit in the entry slot works.

Another way is to stand in the entry slot, facing the head end, open the bag nearly all the way but zipped some so you have a foot box. Slide the bag so the bottom layer is covering the hammock with the top of the bag open to the side, turn, sit, lift feet in and slip into foot box, then start the wrestling Alan mentioned.

To me, the simplest way is to use the hammock as a top quilt, partially zipped to form a foot box. Get in the hammock, slide feet in and pull it over. Tuck the sides under and you are there.
