Is it worth building a cat ridgeline tarp ?

I want a 10x12 UL tarp. I can buy a campmor job for about $90

I really like that size because open it is huge, and in winter or nasty weather, its big enough to set up like a tent with doors.

The question is would it be worth the effort fo to a cat cut ridgeline so it would pitch tighter.

The cost for sil 2nds would be about $50.

I guess the downside is once it is cat cut, you cant set it up in a diamond, bivy etc.

This is just my opinion, but I don't think you'd see much benefit from the cat cut ridgeline. When I pull my tarps tight(without cat cut ridgelines) the ridge pulls into a slightly curved shape anyway. I've never had a problem getting them taut.

I do think the cat cut is great on the sides for help getting a taut pitch.

Sewing sil is challenging. Unless you are just looking to DIY http://speerhammocks.com/ has a good winter tarp for not much more than campor. The question about not being able set up in diamond idk the answer.

    Both my tarps are cat.

I've had both and prefer a cat cut ridgeline. My DIY is a 4" cat cut.

I like my tarps drum-tight, so for me the answer is "yes". However, a tarp with a wrinkle here or there and edges that aren't really tight will still keep you just as dry in the rain. If you're doing a lot of camping in windy areas, then the cat cuts really do help reduce the noise of the tarp blowing, otherwise I'm not sure it makes that much of a difference.

Dont be afraid to sew silnylon-------its not that big of deal! Its just kind of slippery-----------take your time, use a good sharp needle and you'll be just fine. Im not the greatest sewing machine operator, ----if I can do it anyone can!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
