I tried the DD poncho and a military poncho liner. It worked ok, but not great. I had trouble keeping the poncho and liner together. They also tended to sag in all the wrong places. I was comfortable into the mid to low 40s, on a rainy night in Georgia. I ended up buying a Yeti from Warbonnet.
My problem is that I'm so cheap, it ends up costing me more...
Do it right, or DIY it is my vote.
Cheap UQ would be Lost River at $125.,but I'm not sure how that would fit a HH... but a down UQ isn't THAT much more. It all depends on what you want to do. If you're car-camping, a heavy sleeping bag conversion will work ok. RamblinRev made an UQ from a cheap comforter... The KAQ instructions for a HH are out there, many have made them themselves from sleeping bags, or from scratch...
A good down quilt will last for YEARS. Personally, I have a KAQ (Climashield fill) but I rarely see temps below 40.
I have the HH super Shelter and like it very much. I have retired all my old DIY crappy underquilts. I've had the SS down into the mid teens or lower with a lousy 0* Coleman sleeping bag.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I agree completely. I have the SS and it works great, but is a little difficult to get adjusted correctly. For the price I paid, I'm glad I have it, but I plan to get a JRB Nest soon because I hear they are less temperamental-no pun intended...I doubt you will be unhappy with the SS, but play with it a lot at home!
i've heard good things about the SS. but for just a little more you can get a down UQ from te-wa, stormcrow, arrowhead equipment(synthetic, which some like better), or brandon at warbonnet. i also saw a nice UQ from a member here for 150$ that i can't remember. someone help me out here.
if you can get your hands on I Canadian military liner it's good for -30 Celsius to keep a man alive these are three years old all try to do some snooping to see if I can find one.
this would work quite nicely also.
have pic cant get them up sorry

thanx, i just cant decide yet SS or UQ. think im goin to go with the SS it seems to be lighter, less bulky, can be used more than one way.
