grizz,thanks for that link very interesting.i went to the original thread that post was in and even though several times i was distracted by various shiney and bright objects i managed to read through most of it.i did not really understand it,but i got the jist of it and know were to find it for future referance.now i am going out in the woods a couple days and do something easy like stay warm,and try to shake all that math back out.

david,on thefirst pic i pulled the suspension as tight as i could get it.it was allmost straight.the weight of the scale and the fact that the scale has give(its how it measures)kept me from pulling it perfectly straight/tight.as i was reading your post it occured to me that you can never get an accurate reading useing a spring scale.after the suspension is tight i get in the hammock,the scale stretches out to measure,allowing sag into the suspension. relooking at the pic it may have sagged back down to 25deg,hard to tell on that angle.here is a pic from just before getting in hammock for the 280lb reading,the top pic.

Ah! Good point about the scale stretching when you got into the hammock. That would indeed change the sag angle of the main rope and thus change the tension! (Powers that be, cancel my wish for three scales to get simultaneous measurements. I will put my trust in trigonometry.)
