instructions for splices on 1.75 mm

I found a nifty tool at my local sewing shop called a serger needle threader for less than $4. With a little modification it works really well as a splicing tool.... OR SO I THOUGHT

It turns out I'm having some issues getting the buried end of an eye splice to get buried. It seems that the cord doesn't want to open up enough. I know that others have buried with this cord, so does anyone have any technique tips for this?

Taper the end before trying to bury.

You need to cut off about half the strands 0.5" to 1" from the end for the taper. Then when splicing grab the part with only half the strands remaining and pull that part into the braid. The remaining part will then follow inside the braid.

Warm... If youre trying to bury the rope as it sit in the picture, youll never get it. Never. That batch of Red Zing It is braided rather tight.

Do as TeeDee suggests. Either taper it or when you cut it cut it on the diagonal. The taper for the smaller line can be as simple as cutting it on the diagonal as you cut it off the hank.

Then when you are ready to go after the bury, you want just enough in your splicing tool to hold it while you pull it through the line. Ive found if you load it in the splicing tool oriented so the diagonal cut allows the tip of the cut to fold over into the line, it pulls through easier. If that doesnt make sense, Ill get you some pictures.

Be patient and steady, the smaller lines are a little more work, but it does work.

Thanks to both of you for the help. I started the tapering, but found it was rather hard to cut the material, even with brand new scissors. I was then going to pull it through the bury all the way and cut it afterward. I guess the order matters.

Is there a better way of cutting the threads other than toughing through with scissors? I feel like I'm barely cutting any of the finer threads in the braid with each scissor action. Man this cord is tough stuff!!

Yeah, dyneema will dull your scissors in short order. I use my pocket knife and chop onto my work surface, others have had luck with box cutter blades.

also, my stuff cut much more easily if the strand I had pulled out was under tension- hold the rope down with a weight, or forearm, one hand pulls the single strand up, the other wields the scissors. KM

As others have mentioned... With scissors you need tension at the point of cutting. I have a pair of fiskars that used to cut the line with no tension needed. But now I must tension the cut point.

A sharp pocket knife or razor knife on a small cutting board also works VERY well.

Cutting surface and new utility knife (or just the blade).

I also use single edge razor blades and have a scrap peice of 1x4 to cut the line with. I finally got a piece or guitar string and that works beautifully for the smaller line (zing-it, 7/64) but I have to use some thicker wire to pull the bury with 1/8" line.
