    Storing hammocks between trips?

I know that most tent manufacturers recommend NOT storing their tents in the provided stuff sack; many suggest loosely rolling them up an storing an a mesh or breathable material bag between uses. I think it's mostly to allow for any residual moisture to get out and not damage the materials.

Since hammocks are made from similar materials, so does the same advice apply? Or, assuming it's dry, is it safe to just keep it in the stuff sack?

As long as it’s dry and out of direct sun you can store them however you like. In the stuff sack is fine.

If you're sure it's dry then it's perfectly fine to keep it in a stuff sack. I generally take my hammock out of the stuff sack when I get home after a trip because there's probably a bit of moisture present that was generated by me during the night(s). After a couple of hours it goes back in the stuff sack and gets tossed on the gear pile.

I've always stored even tents in their included stuff sacks. It's just general good practice as the above are saying to air/dry out all your gear after returning from a trip, tents, tarps, hammocks, sleeping bags etc. Anything that would have been gathering moisture. Once it's dry it doesn't matter. Even if you're "rolling up" your tent to store in a mesh bag, only the exposed surfaces are going to dry. All the other material folded up on itself is going to mildew if it has any moisture and stored for any extended time.

Because your tarp is usually keeping your hammock pretty dry, it’s much less of an issue than with tents. Double check it of course, but you should find it to be less hassle than a tent.

If it's damp just lay it in a spare bedroom for a couple of day. With the air conditioning running it'll dry out real quickly.

I turn the ceiling fan on high and visit the extra room often to enjoy the great smell of the outdoors.

And sometimes I put the hammocks up on the stands to dry. To guarantee they are dry, I will lay down in them for verification.
