How cold can I take the 1/8" pad from GG?

The title pretty much contains my question but while I know the 1/8” pad is for summer use how deep into three season can I take it? I realize everyone sleeps differently but a ball park estimation would even be beneficial.

I apologize if this has already been discussed in another thread but I attempted to use the search feature and was unsuccessful. If perhaps there is a lengthy discussion on this that I missed and you could link me to it that would also be helpful.

Only you can answer how far you can take this and I would highly recommend backyard testing as some hard core hangers can get a lot lower than many of us that like to stay warm. For me I wouldn't want to use a pad but if I absolutely had to I wouldn't want to take it lower than 50 degrees and that's with some additional clothing. This also varies depending on the density of the foam and manufacture.

The lowest I ever took a 5/8" ccf pad was 22* F. My son and I were on the AT in Connecticut near the Housatonic River. We both had massive (and I mean massive) condensation, literally pools of sweat underneath. And that was the last time I ever used a pad! Went out and bought a UQ immediately (six years ago).

I've comfortably taken that GG pad down to around 30*, though I tend to sleep warm. Never tested it any lower, as I quickly grew tired of the condensation and upgraded to an UQ. Still love that pad though. I like to fold it in half and use it to insulate a full size camping chair.

Yeah....not a fan of sweaty condensation with the CCF pad...just use an underquilt and that’d be great. Mmmkay?

Man I consider myself an "average" sleeper. But no way I could do below 55ish with that thing. They compress at the typical pressure points so it will help, but wouldn't be my choice except as a backup to a zero-insluation planned trip.

One of my first trips was with a 1/8" pad...similar stuff to the GG one. I froze my rear off. About an hour before sunup I was in the car with the heat running...I was mildly hypothermic, shivering out of control. Think it was in the high 40's maybe low 50's. I had a 20° top quilt but it just was not able to make up the difference in the cold that was draining out of me anywhere I touched the pad. Went home from that trip and built my first underquilt.

Is condensation an issue in warmer weather? Say >50°?

Condensation will certainly happen at warmer temps too. It’s moisture coming of you. Pads don’t breath so no place for it to go but collect on the pad.

Totally agree, we tried the zpads with the same results. I'd rather go with 2-3 layers of Climashield. I made a 40 degree UQ out of this for my bridge. At least it breaths. http://thru-hiker.com/materials/insulation.php
