Silnylon to Silpoly...did I jump the gun?

I liked my silpoly tarps after a few trips, mostly dry weather, so I sold the nylon. But after some decent rain this past weekend, I'm worried I jumped the gun on the poly.

First, it didn't seem the shed the water like the nylon tarps I've used for years. Second, it seemed to mist thru very fine. I've never had this with nylon but I know people mentioned it in the past, from big drops hitting hard and forcing some thru.

Here's a pic of the tarp after the rain ended and I knocked off the water as usual. I don't ever recall having this big slick of water on nylon; after a good smack the nylon usually seemed pretty dry like the bottom part of this photo, or even drier. This thing was sopped!

As far as the basic characteristics of the yarn, nylon is hydrophilic and polyester is hydrophobic. This means that any problems you would have would likely be a variance in finish or coating etc., not the nylon v. polyester itself.

Which fabric? The silpoly 1.6 from RBTR and the xenon from Dutch have performed flawlessly for me. Never wetting out, or misting through.

20D silpoly. Man this was a greasy mess. With my nylon tarps I usually just smacked it from the inside and got most of the water off.

Hmm, I’ve been in some fierce rains under my 20d silpoly Mamajamba, and did not have an experience like yours. I would also suspect a problem with the coating. Have you contacted the vendor?

Interesting seeing your picture, it looks like my minifly which is Silnylon 30D (it should be). Comparing to the the HH Hex (Polyester 70D) it was looking sopped!

I have two tarps with the same material, so maybe I'll hit both with the garden hose and see if there are any obvious, immediate differences in how they shed water.

The four tarps we made with sil-poly from RSBTR have never given any problem. No misting and quick drying.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

I have silnylon and keep thinking about the silpoly. As you were probably told, less stretch and does not hold water as much as nylon. What you are saying does not match what I am often told.

I came across this thread on BPL: wet weight of silpoly

I didn't weigh mine, but I'm betting it was a similar experience. I'll have to keep an eye on this tarp and hope for rain (did I just say that?!) each trip as a good test.
