    Down top quilt design.

Since I'm finally finishing up the down UQ, and since I'm so slow, I thought it's about time to start working on the down TQ to match the UQ. I've looked at a bunch of the cottage vendors offerings, and it looks like they either to crosswise channels or crosswise at the bottom, and lengthwise at the top. Thoughts on the tradeoffs?

Also, from reading some of the threads on HF, it seems that the consensus is that differential cut really isn't necessary for the TQ, so I plan on not doing that.

I'm also trying to decide on sewn footbox vs drawcord end. I'm very much tempted to go with the simpler and more versatile drawcord. Maybe I'll add a draft tube so that will essentially block the hole when the drawcord is tight, but I could still open it up and use it like a Sniveler to stay warm around camp. Thoughts?

I bought a HG Burrow 40 with the sewn foot box, then worked out how to do a sewn in foot box in the 20 I made .... having used the sewn foot box, I don't think i would go with snaps, zipper or draw cords.

The sewn in foot box isn't that difficult ... just in case here is the link to my build

I would go with a sewn footbox if it's not to be used as a poncho, with neck opening.
(it's nice to be able to get out of your hammock in the morning, but not out of your quilt)

I sew the footbox on quilts below the freezing mark and use a drawcord on warm-weather top quilts. If you decide to sew, make sure the length is sufficient and the. Try the UGQ Bandit-style sewn footbox, which is boxed like a square-bottom stuff sack.

I like the simplicity of horizontal chambers for DIY down top quilts; if there is taper, one can even vary the width fairly easily so that the exact same quantity of down (e.g., 1 oz) goes into each chamber.

I've got both kinds and have used both on trips on a bed, etc. I do like being able to undo the footbox entirely and lay the TQ out flat in most of those instances.

I like the cord, zipper, and button footbox combo that Hammockgear did last month.

From the inside, I whipped the corded opening [like] Warbonnet's Blackbird whipping. Now, I get to control the footend more easily, but still have it unzipped to breathe. On colder nights, I would zip it, then button it.

Not having used my 20° sewn footbox yet, I do not currently have a solid opinion on the sewn footbox. I'd suspect that it would be absolutely necessary on a 0°F -- or even Artic -- topquilt though.

I’d say sewn under 30 and draw over 30*
