if you tie it right ropes do not cause any more damage to the tree than webbing. I keep 30' of cord in two 15' lengths, I tie a clove hitch around the tree, secured with a bowline, then attach it to the hammock with a taught line hitch. the force of my weight tightens the rope against the tree rather than pulling down, plus the force is divided on the three points. don't know how it would work with a woopie sling tho.

I was thinking about this, and of all things we should do everything we can to protect as hangers; trees seem to be at the top of the list. Where would we be otherwise? The GROUND! So, while we could debate this on and on, I just don't view it as worth the additional risk of injuring or harming in any way that upon which we are so dependent for this little adventure we call hanging.

A lot of energy could be spent on the debate, however; for any potential gain (minimal) the potential harm just doesn't seem to warrant using rope. Cost to benefit ratio doesn't make sense.

I saw someone do this at a MAHHA hang. One tree was so big around he needed both huggers for that one. So on the other smaller tree, he stuck sticks between the cord and tree so the sticks took the damage and not the tree.

I believe this issue came up in the very beginning of the thread that triggered the whole UCR / whoopie sling avalanche.

Failure to use webbing is a risk to everyones future to hang...We run into prohibitions for good reason and attempting to argue the fine points of inserted trail sticks is not inherently pleasing to rangers or conservation minded folk...

It is not only important to cause no damage we must be perceived to cause no damage if we want to see these prohibitions reversed...or not placed on us in the first place...

As our numbers grow, responsibile behavior and habits on the part of all must also grow.

Speaking of this, is there any place where we could petition that would attract NPs or other state agencies to look into the effects of hammocking. Seems to be the discretion of each state and park. Always feel like your committing a crime when you don't know for sure. Problem comes whether to ask and be told no or to just do it and no one says anything.

    thanks for the info:
consensus---don't use the whoopie around the tree.

SO how much weight/space will i save if i change the straps to whoopies, but sill have to carry tree huggers and a biner?

And further, isn't it easier just to mess with the strap than to have to wrap the tree with huggers and then attach the whoopie?
