can you use a whoopie sling around a tree with a biner?

I have webbing on my BB right now and i am wonder if you can use the sling around the tree as i currently use my webbing? Is this a problem with the hurting the tree or is it not feasible with the the sling?

Second question where does the dutch clip fit in to all this?

    Thanks,

It could be done, but the whoopie sling could hurt the tree, use the webbing instead. A dutch clip is an alternative to a 'biner for attaching an end of webbing to the webbing on the other side of the tree.

Check out the left side of this picture. It shows the use of a tree hugger wrapping the tree and then the use of a whoopie sling that is attached to a hammock.

Wow, that's a pretty slick picture. I hadn't seen that one before. Good info, well presented. As far as answering the question asked, I think the consensus here would be that the sling would hurt the tree and that you should use webbing.

Also, in addition to it not being a good idea for the trees helth.. It would make it rather difficult to adjust it since you, Im assuming, would have the adjustable end wrapped around the tree.

Most people (probally all people but it can never be all) use tree straps/ some sort of webbing around the tree and then attach the sling to webbing by use of toggle. This is said be be nicer to the trees when we hang on them. The amsteel is very strong and thin and can cut the bark of the tree and what underneath. Tree staps Save trees

The picture was found in the article section of the forums. I can't remember who made it, certainly not I.

this is one way that arborists use whoopie slings, indeed the point of the adjustability is to cinch the rope around the trunk. Of course, they're pulling stumps and aren't so concerned about the bark, and also can feed the standing end of the rope through the sling....you'd either have to attach the standing end to the hammock separately, or feed the whole hammock through the sling loop (which you could only do at one end anyway )

the fast answer (and I'm just terrible at fast answers) has already been given....the received wisdom here is that you ought to use webbing around the tree.

Also, we use 5/8" soft fuzzy amsteel rope, so it's a much larger surface area.
