    Top quilt size?

I asked this question over in the top insulation a couple days ago and haven't gotten a response. So, I guess I'll try here.

I'm planning on making a poncho liner top quilt. In reading some of the instructions they mentioned cutting it down to the right size for them. However I can't find anything talking about how to figure out what the right size is.

Is there any rule of thumb or equation or whatever to figure this out?

In general, top quilts are about 46" to 50" wide at the top. Some are the same at the bottom, some taper to about 34" wide at the bottom. They're about 72" to 74" long finished size. Add about an inch lengthwise and width-wise for seam allowances. Again, this is just a starting point. If you're real tall, real small, real big, real minimalist, whatever, you'll want to adjust accordingly.

P.S. Can you give me a link to the instructions for a poncho liner top quilt? Thanks!!

Here is the link. Some how I had missed the talk about the dimensions in the thread before. Someone had mentioned pinning up a sheet to try dimensions. I might have to try that before I go to cutting things.

Dimensions are given in post #12 and a there's a drawing in #14. Just noticed that my lengths are different between the two...my template is at my office...can measure it next week if you would like...

I believe 78 inches is the length I used since I can pull it up over my head...

Also...the width across the foot end is pretty wide - makes a 14" diameter foot box...I like to be able to spread my feet apart a little bit

Taper in the leg and footbox is a major place to save weight and bulk. Not suggesting you be uncomfortable, but most of us fix our torsos and easily move our legs. Legs and feet not putting out much heat, they are warmer, too, with less surface area to lose heat through.

Also, after thinking more width was surely needed for a down TQ, what with tucking in and all, I was surprised to find out an HG TQ I already had was likely so much warmer than its rating because it was narrower and loftier than current production design, @ 46" - 48'", 2-4 inches less. Never a problem tucking that in, either.
