    OMG - I missed that entirely. I cannot imagine what the PVC pipe is for - I don't want to know!

    I was reading through the comments on these straps at amazon trying to figure out what the PVC would be for. In one of the last comments, it sounds like you would slip the PVC through the sewn channel at the end of the hammock. Then slide the strap loop through the PVC to get it through the channel. Then remove the PVC, leaving the loop in place. There's a link to youtube vid, but I didn't watch it.

    I watched of their videos where they were demonstrating the straps. The guy had the hammock stretched pretty much horizontally between 2 trees, then commented on the straps being fairly loose. He proceeded to tighten them up even more. You could just about walk across the tight rope at that point.
