    N. GA. camping the week of the 4th

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a trip report, but I have just come back from a week in the N. GA. mountains and wanted to share some pics. It rained much more than we wanted, but we stayed pretty dry. Everyone in the family has finally converted to hanging, but I only have 3 tarps for the 6 of us. Two sets hung side by side and one set went with the bunk type hang. It was a little tight, but everyone agreed that close quarters are much better than sore backs and hips due to the ground.

We did a lot of reading, which was one of the main goals of getting away. I have to brag on my kids about being good about leaving the world of cell phone connectivity. I hear horror stories from co-workers and their daily fights about electronics. We actually had to track down a used book store to resupply 2/3 of the way through the week. I finally started reading the Jack Reacher series. I should have started years ago. I guess I can watch the movies now … and see if I like how the character makes the transition from book to film.

One night I heard my daughter grunt and I looked over to her hammock and found that our dog, 80 lbs. of half lab and half Shepard decided to join her to escape the rain that had started. I guess I need to make one more for him.

We took a few side trips during the week. We did a short loop through NC and visited a few waterfalls (no pics in this thread), hiked a few hours on the Bartram Trail at the Warwoman Dell area, and had an impromptu drive up to the GSMNP for a family favorite loop. We saw 1 elk, numerous turkeys, and 3 bears. I usually see bears on the western side of the park, but these three were on the eastern side, very close to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. Sadly, the SLR was left at the house since I wasn’t planning on the GSMNP day trip and all pics were made via cell phones. Oh well, my bad. The morning in the GSMNP was quite cloud covered, but cleared up nicely after lunch time.

Glad you guys hit the Overlook and got to go up before they temporarily closed it for repairs!!! Its so gorgeous in GsMNP. I love both sides, and wish I could spend more time that direction. It has grown back in beautifully since the fires!

You are right. I saw today that the overlook is being closed during the repair period. All of the supplies were staged off to the side of the walkway.

Love to see families in the woods. Especially love the SMNP and the surrounding area.

Give me a shout next time you're hanging in N GA and I'll loan you some tarps. Anybody that camps as a family, I don't mind helping out. Some of my best childhood memories are the family campouts, and I'm sure your kids will feel the same.

Good job getting your family out there and making it happen with what you had on hand!

I have read most of the books in the reacher series too, very enjoyable!

God be with you raising four daughters my friend!

Thanks for the offer. Three has always been enough until this trip. With mixed emotions, this may be that last full family camping trip. The two older girls have been accepted to different colleges and may be tied up with school concerns next summer. We shall see what the future holds.

Thanks! They are all great kids, but definitely keep me busy. They all enjoy getting out and exploring nature.
