    Fire vs Hammock

Would you use a fire to stay warm in your hammock at night ?
(temp not below freezing but still cold)

I dont really trust fire and hammocking. The fact that my hammock/tarp can burn being too close to the fire.. or become damaged.. are you forced to use layers, quilts, pads, water bottle, anything beside fire to stay warm when you are out in the wild for the night ??

That also bring me to another point, how much a difference is the cheap-arse-wally-world-blue-ccf-pad gonna make ..

if you set your tarp high in a lean to. then build a small fire in front. it will keep you nice and toasty.

I would not myself. Not unless it was some kind of emergency situation, & then I'd be mighty weary of it.
Better might be to use natural resources for insulation if you did not have enough IMHO.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

A real big difference. In the winter, maybe you'd want two, but for three season - just one is fine.

I'd keep fire away from your gear. Those floating sparks do a number on tarps and hammocks.

The nature of fires is thus: something burns, ashes/embers float up and fall down. Do you really want embers falling on your tarp/hammock? I generally build fires a good 50 feet from my camp. for that reason. Seen burn holes in clothes, dont need em in my hammock.

Fire vs Hammock= Fire wins... I believe there are a few post on the site of tarps / hammocks with fire damage. If it is soooo cold that I need a fire than I sleeping on the ground, maybe in a makeshift leanto and a fire. I hope that never happesn...

About the same answer most would give regarding using a fire to stay warm in a tent. 'Don't do it'

LORDY no ... can you say WHOOOSHHHHHH! The sound of sil nylon and flame!

Actually with all the options (check Shug's excellent videos) for keeping warm ... not worth the risk or the risk of spark damage to your tarp of hammock ... to me at least. Not that said ... there are posts here of guys using those little wood stoves quite effectively in sil shelters. Seem to do a really good job.

ive never use hammock before, waiting on my WBBB.. I do wilderness survival and always build lean-to style shelter .. always had a fire in front of it (even then I was worried about fire). So I guess i'll look for alternative then..

I thought fire vs hammock = Fire wins too.. just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one thinking that.

I need to check on that "water bottle to stay warm" thread tonight.. otherwise, i'll buy a blue ccf and bring a few layers and should be ok.

Mmm... My wife gave me a propane catalytic heater years ago that I used only once. I may take it along on my next car camping trip and see if it has any effect in my winter tarp pitched low to the ground with the doors closed. Just curious.
