DIY mesh snake skins - need some advice

So the sticky's for this were pretty good, and not so good all at the same time. I liked the info that was initially presented, but there is a broken link to the Jacks-R-Better tutorial and the the tutorials that are up are all videos (not always a bad thing) but it looks to be very straight forward. What I was hoping to get some help with is the pocket that the guy lines can be stored in. I would love to see some more detailed photo's about it's use and construction (specifically if there is a closure or if it just "rides" if you will in the pocket). I also was hoping someone who has made one or has some knowledge of them can weigh in on the shock cord and whether this is useful or if a simple lock cord is more functional.

Lastly I have a question on whether the 2 piece snake skins are more user friendly or the one piece as I am favoring is a better way to have a no muss no fuss set up.

    Thanks for the help

Some people don't like the two piece skins because they experience the middle of the tarp bunching and/or ballooning in the middle. My two piece skins (from MountainGoat) overlap enough that the bit of bulging as I pull the first one just past center is barely a concern. I'm happy with what I have, but that's not saying it's for everyone, i.e. HOYH!

I store my guidelines separately so a pocket is not an option I went for.

I will be very little help on the pocket aspect because mine has no pocket. I made them in a few minutes and they work great. What I CAN say is that I went from no skins to double skins and I am in love. So much better than stuff sack, double ended or not. I do have better results if I roll the tarp loosely before sliding them on, or it bulges in the middle a bit. Still super fast to set up and take down. I was a bit taken aback by the loose, floppy snake going all Willy nilly in my pack, but after one use, all my misgivings were gone. I had thought about making a mesh stuff sack but didn't need it afterward. It seems like a good portion of the folks that make the switch from doubles to singles are solid converts. Whether double ended or not, snake skins are fantastic, and I'm sold.

For my large tarps I do like a one piece snakeskin.

I added snaps to my 2-piece mesh snake skins. Works perfectly for me.

Goat & Shug thanks - Watched a bunch of videos and decided one sleeve as Shug mentioned with the size one seemed easier. Here is it set up. I sewed one inside pocket and an outside one - I figure for the outside one or use that as a shammy holder so I can dry off the tarp before I store.

When I first started wanting to try snakeskins, I used undone bath loofas. They aren't durable at all but are really cheap and are a good way to try and see what you like. Ended up going with the single sleeve from Mountaingoat and don't regret it. I also use the end lines to wrap the taro and I secure it to the side of my pack.

Yeah I tried them and did like them but I wasn't sure about the 2 piece - I haven't 100% decided but I think the one piece as I have made is my preference. Less to mess with. I think the window sheer material is a bit heavy too but for my purposes I think I like it so far.

I find my one-piece to easier, faster and lighter; also faster to make. I don't leave my ridgelines attached to the tarp.

Plan the pockets into the skins before sewing them into a tube.
