    SUL hammock

Hey ya'll. Working on a SUL packing list (under 5 pounds) and one of my personal challenge things on this is to have it be a hammock kit.

I've been working on something in a hammock under 7 ounces and have made something, but I'm not totally comfortable with what I use working and/or making it through a hike at this point. Right now it is a 1.1 ounce single layer at 45" wide x 3 yards. It has four side tie outs and sort of hangs like a bridge hammock. I've been in it a few times and worn out the "stretch" and it hasn't fallen apart yet, but it took me a few busted asses to get to this point as the material is sort of slick and their isn't much there for the friction of the whipping to hold it together. Thanks to you guys I've changed my whipping to a W style and changed my line attachment to a double sheet bend. No tree straps - I figure I'll use sticks to protect the trees from the line in order to save weight. The hammock with lines is about 5.3 ounces, and I'm using a poncho tarp at 10.4 ounces with about 0.7 ounces of lines for the tarp, and 0.5 ounces of stakes.

I was wondering if anyone out there has already been down this trail and what you did and what you used. Maybe I'm re-inventing the wheel and don't need to.

    Thanks.

    Te-Wa has a thread about sub-5 here.

There have been a few discussions about the lightest hammock itself, but that's the only one I recall with a full list.

Thanks - his hammock weighs more than mine does though. His probably has a bug net - something I haven't figured out how to add to my hammock yet.

I don't think so - that hammock doesn't come with a bug net - it's got to be bought separately. The weight lines up with the hammock w/o bugnet from Warbonnetguy's site.

With a bugnet I bet you could come in right about the weight of that hammock w/o bugnet. I have a single layer with 1.6oz ripstop that weighs in at 16oz even with suspension and full zippered bugnet.

I look forward to seeing your end result!

Might want to check out Gardenville's post on cuben hammocks. One of them is here...

Using permethrin on a hammock may be debatable, but it's definitely lighter than a bugnet.

Thanks for that link. I don't know if I'm brave enough to build one, but I may screw up the courage.

Welcome back to the forum SGT, haven't seen you round these parts in awhile! Good luck with your hammock, check out the nano 7-one of the lightest there is. Might I enquire what your considering for isulation? Probably pads since your concerned about weight?
