Keeping UQ dry in strong storms

Hey all, I'm out in the Roan Highlands and last night had to hang in a shelter at 1am because my uq was getting splashed by rain and wind from a super strong thunderstorm. How can I pitch to avoid the same scenario tonight?

Tarp was blowing and stakes almost came out, water came in under me because I was on a slight slope. Gah...

Given that you have a tarp that is 126" x 62" and no underquilt protector, staying dry will be all about location, location, location. Set up below any ridges, find the lee side of any vegetation that will help block wind/rain, and pitch as low as you can go. Good luck and have fun!

Skimpy tarp requires UQP. Or get yourself a 4-season tarp and always stay dry!

    laracrofty,

For tonite, think about modding up maybe a poncho or a jacket. Just bunch up the ends and tie off with paracord. Then add cordage to each bunched end and attach to your hammock suspension points. Climb in and if needed, pull the modded fabric around the underside of your hammock. A large trash bag could also work.

Once back home, order a 2QZQ Underquilt Protector. Great people and a great piece of gear.

Let us know how it ends.

In the CO mountains we get hammered all summer by storms. I try to find hang sites with some brush protection and align my rig parallel to the prevailing weather. If storms are a good bet I hang my tarp low to my hammock and align my foot end (higher) into the wind. If you don't have a UQP take your rain jacket and wrap the foot end. This should block most of the heavy stuff. If your UQ is DWR and has a treated outer shell the remaining spray will for the most part dampen your UQ, but it shouldn't soak thru. Try to choose a bigger tree for the foot end as well, it just helps deflect precip as well.

Thanks all! I had awful phone service out there. To add some specifics, I have a ugq penny pincher tarp with doors and snaps. This is the first time I've ever had an issue and it seems to rain or storm every time I'm out

It rained/stormed again last night but I was pitched on a flatter area- the night I had issues I didn't have a lot of options in terms of hang spots, so ended up with one side of the tarp basically on the ground and the other higher than I wanted, because a slope was running perpendicular to my hammock/tarp. It was also a pretty extreme storm...

Will read/respond properly when I get all the way home.

Regarding the stakes not holding, you could opt to tie out to a big rock or bush instead.

    Ditto!
I tie a stick to the end of my guylines and then lay a rock over the line. The stick keeps the guyline from slipping out from under the rock.
