    Chatting

So I may have just solved a little problem I've had since the beginning. My wife has been on a few trips with me, but has always been reluctant come time to call it a night. It's dark, cold and lonely all by yourself in a hammock...I get it. I thought about walkie-talkies, but didn't like to have to carry extra equipment. But then I ran across an app that runs on IOS & Android that allows texting without a data or Internet connection!

It's called Firechat https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2470887,00.asp, I have not tested it in the woods yet but it has worked just fine in airplane mode. If it really works as advertised, it could be very useful.

Maybe others have used it or similar?

Have you thought about hanging double via a Dutchware system or similar? My wife and I always enjoyed the close proximity when we hung together.

Oh yeah I totally have, and plan to later down the line. I was just thinking this would be a pretty useful app.

They claim 200 ft, but can increase with more people using it...

"Thanks to FireChat’s innovative multi-hop and store-and-forward capabilities, FireChat users form a network that increases in size with the number of devices. It allows messages to hop from one device to the next in order to reach the recipient(s). This is why the more people use FireChat, the better and the larger the network becomes (unlike with cellular networks). "

You could always go old school with two tins and a piece of string.
No worries about running out of batteries!

Alternatively, unless you’re hanging a looong way apart, you could just talk. It’s amazing how sound carries at night.
You would probably find that the volume you speak into the Firechat app will easily carry 20-30 metres.

I haven’t tried the app but I can see some merit for hammock camping. There have been times that my son and I were hanging 30’ apart and the rain was so heavy that we couldn’t hear each other even if shouting. Or, when camping with scouts so the leaders and youth are sleeping in separate patrol areas. Although 200’ might pushing it at times.

If I understood correctly, it’s for texting, not talking.
