Hammock gear Econ under quilt vs premium under quilt?

    Hey everyone,

Can anyone talk about their experience with both the Econ and premium top and bottom quilts? I know one is duck vs goose down. I like the price of the Econ and I think I’d only need the 20° rating. But is there anything I should know that would make me regret not getting the premium version?

I have both premium and saver series quilts from Loco Libre, and the saver series is of the same quality as the premium. I don't own Hammock Gear quilts, but all of the comments I've read on them are the same. The budget versions use 800fp duck down and Dutchware's Ion fabric. I actually prefer the feel of the Ion fabric over Argon 90. It has a softer hand. The Argon is probably a little more durable; but I don't mistreat my quilts, so that's a non-issue. The premium quilts will weigh slightly less. But I'd argue that you probably wouldn't even feel the difference between the two in your pack.

For my money, I'd go with the HG Econ, LL Saver Sieries, or budget quilts from Wilderness Logics.

I've got a Econ Incubator 0 and absolutely love it. Yes, it's a little heavier that the standard versions, but it comes at a huge price savings and weight isn't an issue, since I'm using a pulk for winter camping. Whatever you pick, HYOH and buy what works for you.

Summary from HG: "The main difference between Premium and Econ quilts is the weight, due to a couple of factors. The first is, we use Ion fabric (20 denier) on our Econ quilts versus the Argon 67 (10 denier) and Argon 90 (15 denier) fabric we use on our Premium quilts. The only other difference is, we use 800 DWR Duck Down in the Econ quilts versus the 850 DWR Goose Down used in our premium model quilts. The difference in weight ends up being approximately 4-5 ounces heavier for the Econ quilts, depending on the model. Both the Econ and Premium version are issued the same size stuff sack, dependent upon its temperature rating."

    Lots of good discussion here:

Great info, thanks! I’ll keep watching this thread, and check out those other threads. Seeing that they use the same stuff sack answers the pack ability issues I was also wondering.

    Thanks again to all!

The only negative reports that I've read is the duck down can have an odor if the down gets damp/wet. I've experienced this with a duck down sleeping bag as well.

Was it bad enough of an odor that made you regret getting it vs the pros of being economical?

I just realized that you were referring to a sleeping bag, but still looking forward to your thoughts, thanks!

Mine was a sleeping bag and I just didn't use this one if it was going to be wet. Others will have to chime in on the econ quilts as I no longer own any econ models.

Care to share why you don't have any econ models any longer?

I already had the "non-econ" quilts and really like them so I sold my two econ quilts. Otherwise I would have kept them.
