I wonder if anyone can offer a $100 introductory kit that is better than what one can get from Walmart.

I doubt seriously anyone getting a full kit under $100 would be pleased with the product. You get what you pay for. The best way to spend less is to buy used here on the forum or if you have DIY skills, or know someone who has DIY skills to go the DIY route. Another option is to check the REI garage sales for an ENO double nest and atlas straps., but then you need a tarp and insulation. The full hammock camping setup is going to cost quite a bit for 4 season. If you live in a mild dryer climate (California, for example), you may get away with spending less on the setup.
Overall though, Dutch has a great entry level price point for his hammock camping rig IMHO.
Where was this kit when I was starting out? It would've saved me tons of money....of course I wouldn't have all the different gear I now have in my search for the perfect set up

True. But for someone who doesn't care about that, and only wants an affordable tarp with good coverage that will keep you dry, the Chill Gorilla is a pretty good deal. I had no issues with mine; but decided I wanted a lighter tarp that packs down smaller. My son uses the CG now, and it works well.
Yeah, I just had to get a joke in about that. Cheap, effective, Amazon prime. No surprise they're selling well.
What does the kit weigh?

Yet another great Idea from Dutch to help his customers!
