While a pergola is attractive, it is pricey. A low cost way to hang sans trees is to fabricate yourself a turtle dog stand or buy a Tato or Tensa 4 stand. So many ways to skin this cat( no offense to the PETA folks...People Eating Tasty Animals).

The answer here is bench swing. Eye bolts through the upper horizontal to hang a bench swing makes it a present for your wife rather than for you.

"What's that thing for?" becomes, "Oh, you're so sweet, thank you!"

That's how I'd play it, anyway...

I would vote for a pergola as well. Actually, I did make a pergola years ago and it is a great hammock post setup. Also, I have 24"x24" pavers and a table with chairs and a small portable fire pit. She thought it was outdoor dinning and it is. I guess. But it's my Hammock Test Center.

For yours so far, you can hang plants and herbs when you're not in the hammock to "pretty it up" and push them to either side when you occupy the space.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

That was how I sold the Mrs. - - I think we are going to have a raised garden behind it too so that the "hammock stand" looks like an entry way to a garden.

If using wood, I strongly recommend that you do not use 4x4 posts. I had two break on me while hanging. Go with at least 4x6 or 6x6. If you live along the coast, check out a Marine Hardware store and get some 7"-8" diameter 12ft tall pier pilings as they make great hammock trees.

Excellent advice. I went metal so I think I will not have any issues - just have to camoflage it with wooden pickets

4 X 4 s wouldn't hold up on their own but a structure built with them as the uprights with crossmembers on top would be plenty strong.

As far as the metal goes, you could box them in with 1-bys!
