Owyee and New River long term review...

I have been going through all my gear recently, you know, deciding on upgrades, culling the less worthy, and just reliving some memories. Some of my stuff is DIY but much more is from vendors the started right here on HF.

Of all the things I am upgrading this year, like hammocks, tarps and suspensions, there are two pieces of gear that will not be needing an upgrade; my Owyhee and New River quilts.

From the Kick *** line, they really live up to their namesake. I am hard on gear, which is why I went with synthetic in the first place; and I have to say that these are tough pieces of equipment.

    Just a few incidents:
I had my Owyhee blow out of the hammock and into the river, it was dry in about 1 hour or so and I used it that night.
I didn't put my tarp up when hunting and it rained, hard; it filled my New River up with water, I bet I had 30 gallons of water in that thing. I dried it out and used it that night.
Another time I also didn't put my tarp up and it rained I ended up using the Owyhee all night next to the fire, after I dried it out next to the fire of course.
They have blown out of boats, fallen off of four wheelers and been tossed out of truck beds (actually, that was the whole backpack, but they were attached).

My quilts have been my constant and faithful companions, keeping me warm without fail. I'm not sure but I think I have had them 4 or 5 years now, which is a testament to their toughness.

My Kick *** quilts will not be upgraded, I'm keeping them and will buying a new pair for my son.

Awesome gear Paul, keep it up!

    Hey Rat,

Thanks for the review. Always appreciate hearing how the gear is holding up after years of use. And that they have worked as we intended even in some rough weather and hard use situations.

I looked and your quilts were built in Mid October of 14'.

Summer is my busy season, so even though I don't post much I still watch your videos like a fiend looking for a fix!

So 4 years this year, outstanding gear. I will be ordering Gage's set pretty soon. It's a big day in a boy's life when he gets a new set of quilts!

Great to know! Thank you for sharing. I was wondering about Paul’s top quilts. What is the weight on the Top Quilt?

This is what I think of when I hear Owyhee. The Owyhee Wilderness in Idaho. A popular float and kayak trip with an abundance of rattlers. Not much opportunity to hang in the canyon.

I've never seen a stronger testimonial! Were the temps ever cold enough to test the ratings?

My New River is the 0 degree model, I've had it to 12 degrees with my Owyhee (not sure which temp rating) and normal clothing for that temp. My Owyhee is either the 30 degree or the 15 degree model, I can't remember.

I am confident that, with the proper clothing, they would be comfortable (not just survivable) for me down to the rating. I am a warm sleeper, but I hate the cold...
