How I pan trips in Japan (Part 1: Research)

A fellow member, Hydroraven, asked a while back how I plan my trips. I figured this would be a good opportunity to document an upcoming trip this weekend to a place I have never been.

    SOURCE
I follow some sites that focus on hiking in Japan

    https://ridgelineimages.com
    https://japanhike.wordpress.com

I bookmarked a trip to Shirayanomaru/Kurodake over at Ridgeline Images that I wanted to go for some time.

    RESEARCH and PLANNING
After I get an idea where I want to go, I head off to Yamareco.

    https://www.yamareco.com

This is an amazing site where hikers report their trip, upload their photos and share their gps tracks and waypoints. The site indexes their trip and provides some rich features for free (sign-up required). Mobile version is very limited and you will to need a paid subscription to access the app in similar fashion you can do for free on the PC.

I search by mountain name and it will list trip reports submitted by its active user base.

I’ll examine photos and the topography for places to possibly camp.

Next, I cross reference trip reports with my hiking map. I use Yamatokogen mobile app along with their paper maps available at any big book stores.

Afterwards I pull down the GPS track files from Yamereco into Garmin Basecamp and start creating my routes.

I’ll eventually upload this to both Gaia GPS and Garmin InReach.

Finally, I Google-foo how to get to trailhead and back. I don’t have a car and need to rely on public transport. Luckily there a lots of places within easy reach from Tokyo.

I’ll copy my map, begin tracing my route and write down water sources, vistas and other trail notes.

My wife did not enjoy the part where I met up with a bear on this trip.
