My first cold weather setup was the Phoenix 40 with the homemade down throw under it. On one frigid night i put an insulated pad in the hammock to achieve single digits. It gave me the option to use the throw during the summer and mild temperatures and gave me an extra setup for a kid or buddy during milder months. I have since bought TQs and better UQs. But i still like the flexibility of a stacked or layered system.
I can't turn the 20* UQ into two 50* UQs...but i can turn two 50* UQs into a 20* so to speak.
I enjoy working for my heat...it seems to make my food taste better. -Richard Proenneke

I also recommend the 10F buffer rule but as others have said you can set the underquilt up loose and it wont get too hot. I do this with my 40F HG under quilt I use on my hammock stand at home during warmer months.

You will more than likely buy two underquilts at some point Go ahead and get that WL 15 degree UQ in case you get the itch to go to the mountains or somewhere cold, or, as others have suggested, try out the Hammock Gear Phoenix 20 degree Econ. Then save some some cash over time and buy a WL summer series underquilt for those warmer months.
