Walmart hammock is going through changes

So I bought a Walmart hammock since it said it would handle 500lbs. I’m a bit over 300 right now and I’ve loved it but it’s been too heavy for my tastes with the TNC straps I bought. So my plan is to switch to a UCR with 1/8” Amsteel. And I’m planning on removing the webbing continuous loop that in the end channels and using amtseel as a knot to larks head my UCR behind it. This should lighten things up a lot! And to save some money I’m going to get the tarp kit from RBTR because my 10’x10’ bushcraft tarp is a bit much and a bit too heavy and using the continuous tarp line from Whoopie slings with snakeskins for faster set up in the rain. Doing this should lighten my load by 2-3 POUNDS. If anyone has any suggestions I’d be happy to hear them.

I've made three tarps:
12' precut hex in olive yellow,
12' precut hex in Morrocan Blue,
8 yds 1.1 Oz silpoly in Amaranth,
All from RSBTR. They have kept me high and dry through substantial rain.
Highly recommend the precut hex tarp kit. Makes assembly so much easier. The olive yellow color is awesome. Great way to save ounces and $$$. Go for it. You'll be pleased with the results.

You might want to also try out whoopie slings to see if you prefer them to UCR’s. They may be heavier, but they are more foolproof. I like UCR’s for an adjustable hammock ridgeline, but whoopies for hammock suspension. Nothing wrong with larking your whoopie or UCR directly to your hammock though. That’s a good way to save weight and shorten your suspension. Wet amsteel is not as big of a deal to pack with your hammock as are sappy straps or wet poly straps. Use a Sap Sack for that.

I was toying with the idea of a whoopie sling instead and I’m not totally against it yet as I still need to purchase everything. But the Sap Sack is a really good idea. I hadn’t heard of those before and I’ll be looking into your other suggestions too. Thank you!!

I love my Sap Sack. Partly because I have it in a bright orange, which is hard to lose or misplace. I clip it to my waistline with a micro biner along with my stake bag (from AHE as well and you should check it out too). Then I store my tarp ridgeline in my sap sack along with my hammock suspension. As I setup and break camp, having those items attached and handy is more efficient.

i upgraded my walmart hammock with whoopie slings, not really for weight saving just didn't trust the rope it came with... works great

It caught my eye because I have a cheapo Sunyear hammock that is similar to the equip and I'm going to do similar mods to mine.

I used that video and made the mod to my first hammock. Compared to the hammocks I'm using now, the Equip is short and heavy. I was thinking of replacing all the lines on it with Zing it and Amsteel but it would be a waste. I would rather make another hammock.

I would like to make my own hammock at some point but it’s more in my budget to lighten up the hammock I have now. I’m poor haha.

Gee, nice to see that my video has helped some of you. I use this procedure to modify many different hammocks. My personal "go to" hammock is my Equip. It is 10ft long and this mod took it from a "so so" hammock to a very comfortable hammock. Lee, the one I did the video on, says it made a big difference and now loves his Equip hammock. Again, happy that the videos are doing some good.
