    Compressed/packed size?

So, I am having a debate with myself regarding down vs synthetic. I like what I read about the benefits of Apex, but I worry about packed size, as I really don't want to have to buy a bigger back pack (I have a ULA OHM, which I love!). Can anyone with experience with the New River in 3S and 4S comment on the packed size of them? Or, even better, maybe post some pictures showing them compressed in their stuff sack with something else in the photo to provide scale? Or, measurements of them compressed? I am just a bit concerned that that I may not really have the room in my pack for a set of Apex 3S or 4S quits for a 3-4 night outing along with my other gear.
    Thanks!

What is your pack volume?? [Edit: Sorry, you said Ohm so I'll have to look it up... ok, 63 liters is pretty big]

Generally, synthetics don't take up significantly more space than down in the 40 deg and warmer range. Below 40 deg, it's down every time for me.

One thing that is very often overlooked where bulk is concerned is shell material. I got a first-hand education in this when I bought thru BPL gearswap a 40 deg EE Prodigy quilt (now called Revelation Apex) without bothering to find out the shell material, which turned out to be 20D. It took up a LOT more space than my identical Prodigy made with 10D material and was a few ounces heavier, of course.

Also, synthetic fill isn't going to maintain its loft nearly as long as down. I've had down bags that I would swear haven't lost any loft in 25 years. And I've owned a few synthetics as well, and this could never be said for any of them.

Perfection is achieved not when nothing more can be added but when there is nothing left to take away.

The Terminator is still using a Snow Lion synthetic fill sleeping bag she got in the early 70's and it has not lost its loft.

I took a Jarbige UQ and an Owyhee TQ on a hike on the AT. I used a compression bag and strapped them to the outside of my pack to save room.

Paul has a video on the AHE site where he does this.
