    Nano Whoopies (Using Mason Line!)

You can make a whoopie sling or utility constrictor rope (UCR) out of just about any braided cord, including ordinary mason line it turns out.

Mason line is that cheap stuff for setting guidelines when aligning bricks or fencing. It's <$5 for 250 feet, has a 17lb working load, and most importantly has a hollow braid which makes our whoopie sling possible. (It also comes in more common twisted varieties, so pay attention when purchasing).

In order to make this work, i had to resort to using a wire i pulled from a grocery store paper twist-tie. No other tools were small enough. I was able to make a perfectly good nano-whoopie with locked brummel eye splice on one end and a fully functional whoopie sling with 8" bury on the other end.

And i have no use for this.

What can you do with a mason line nano-whoopie?

Ha! I can't honestly think of a good use for this. It's a bit too light for tarp tie out, and any gear I have that may hang doesn't need a whoopie. If it were mine, it would probably go into the "because I can" box of stuff I'll never actually use.

I will say, if you put a locked brommel eye on both ends of the whoopie, you get a much larger range of usable length.

Adjustable ridgeline? That's the way I use a whoopie sling made from mason line.

Second that. I've been using it for over 2 years now. If I remember correctly mine indicated a 50 lbs rating, I also use shock tensioners. If my tarp is subjected to any force greater than that I want the lines to break not the tarp. Also managed to make a couple dogbones, (very difficult with old eyes and lack of splicing tools that small), they come in handy for hanging the pack and such.

How about an adjustable length pack hanger for us card carrying gram weenies with sub-20 lb packs?

Pretty cool.. I love the twist tie wire.

Sent from somewhere east of Montauk...
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I made lines like that to support an small wire antenna. Rather fun to mess with the stuff. ;-)

So I actually went out and bought another spool of orange and black since I had run out. The label marked it as 165 pound test. Now I'm not going to make a hammock suspension with it, but I'm pretty sure it can handle anything I need for my tarp. I like the visibility of the orange and black.

You can make continuous loops with braided mason too- don't ask me what for- just because. I use a high E steel guitar string for all my splicing.
